First baseman Greg Bird is attempting to resurrect his career with his hometown team.
The former Grandview High School star signed a minor league deal with the Rockies Thursday, the club announced. Bird received an invitation to big league camp.
Bird, 28, showed huge promise in 2015 when he made his big-league debut with the Yankees, slashing .261/.343/.529 with 11 homers in 178 plate appearances. But his career has been derailed by injuries, including a torn labrum in his right shoulder that required surgery in February 2016. He also had surgery to remove a bone spur in his right ankle.
After undergoing shoulder surgery, Bird returned to hit .451 with eight home runs in spring training 2017 but fouled a ball off his right ankle on March 30, started the season 6-for-60 and went on the injured list on May 2. When the foot did not improve, Bird had surgery on July 18 to remove a bone in the ankle.
He returned in late August and hit three home runs in the playoffs, including a seventh-inning drive off Andrew Miller that lifted New York to a 1-0 win over Cleveland in Game 3 of the American League division series.
In 186 games over four seasons, Bird, a left-handed hitter, has batted .211 with 32 home runs and a .725 OPS over 611 plate appearances.
Bird spent most of the 2020 season with the Texas Rangers organization, but he didn’t play in a big-league game.
Josh Fuentes is penciled in as Colorado’s starting first baseman, but with Ryan McMahon moving to third base to replace the departed Nolan Arenado, the Rockies need depth at first base.
Bird was drafted in the fifth round by the New York Yankees in 2011.
Game times announced. The first pitch for the Rockies’ 2021 season is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. on April 1 vs. the defending World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN as part of the sports network’s opening-day coverage.
Game times for Rockies games through the rest of the season will remain as they have been for the past few seasons. Most weeknight games will begin at 6:40 p.m., with Saturday night games beginning at 6:10 p.m. First pitch for day games on weekdays and Sundays will be at 1:10 p.m.
