IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) -- More than 43 geese are currently in the care of the Iowa Bird Rehabilitation group with an unknown illness.
The Des Moines based group posted to Facebook about ongoing rescue efforts near Iowa City over the past few days. Volunteers captured the sickened animals before turning them over to the care of the IBR.
What's exactly wrong with the geese remains a mystery. IBR says they're working with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to determine the cause. Blood and tissue samples are currently being analyzed by the state.
"Right now we will give the geese supportive care and hope that once they are warmed and re-hydrated, they begin to improve. We will adjust our treatment as needed with symptoms they present or if we get answers on what might be the cause," the group wrote on Facebook.
One of the volunteers, Brandon Caswell, shared a Facebook live video earlier in the week in which he described some of the symptoms. Caswell said that some of the geese were experiencing some neurological symptoms and feared some may also be suffering from hypothermia.
The IBR says they're going through supplies quickly in treating the birds and are asking for donations.
Iowa Bird Rehabilitation is a registered 501c(3) nonprofit group.
