It isn’t every day we’re presented with an opportunity to join a project that is free, fun, and includes participants from almost 200 countries, is open to everyone young and old, and can be done just about anywhere — yes, even quarantined!
Join people around the world in the 24th annual Great Backyard Bird Count, Friday through Monday, Feb. 12-15.
Participating is easy — watch birds for 15 minutes or more at least once, or as many times as you wish, during the four days and then report your findings. Add to the fun — share photos of birds, yourself, or other birdwatchers in action.
The information gathered and documented by participants during this annual event becomes part of an extensive database, providing scientists with important information that allows them to learn about habitat quality, pollution, disease outbreaks, and — on a more positive note — the success of habitat restoration efforts.
To learn more about joining the Great Backyard Bird Count, just visit birdcount.org and click on “How to Participate.” No prior registration, experience, or special knowledge is necessary, although plenty of free opportunities to learn are made easily accessible; binoculars can be helpful, but aren’t essential. For those new to identifying birds or to participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count, a link is provided to the Merlin Bird ID app — one of two apps used to report the counts.
Merlin provides some helpful resources and tools to find and identify birds, as does eBird, an app for more experienced birders.
During last year’s Great Backyard Bird Count, more than a quarter of a million participants from 194 countries reported over 27 million bird sightings that included 6,942 bird species — more than half of all the known bird species around the world!
Here’s your opportunity to become a “citizen scientist,” if you aren’t already, by observing and sharing information valuable for research necessary for the protection of our wildlife habitat, the environment, and our health.
“Connect to birds, to nature, and with each other,” encourages birdcount.org. “Birds are everywhere, all the time, doing fascinating things.”
Join this event, “when the world comes together for the love of birds.”
How it helps
According to Audubon.org, “Each checklist submitted during the Great Backyard Bird Count helps researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society learn more about how birds are doing, and how to protect them and the environment we share. Recently, more than 160,000 participants submitted their bird observations online, creating the largest instantaneous snapshot of global bird populations ever recorded.”
