Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird, who has missed the past four games, is expected back in the lineup for Wednesday's WNBA matchup with the Washington Mystics. She is listed as probable on the Storm's injury report.
Bird has been battling knee issues this season after missing all of the 2019 season because of knee surgery. Bird previously was out for five games this season; in all, she has played in just seven of the Storm's 16 contests and is averaging 10.1 points and 4.6 assists. Seattle is in first place in the league at 13-3.
"She's probably gonna play," Seattle coach Gary Kloppenburg said Tuesday. "Through rehab, she's been working on her conditioning, so she looked pretty good getting up and down the floor, made some really nice plays in the short practice that we had today.
"She'll be able to step right in there. ... Obviously, we don't know, minute-wise, how that will look, but we're really excited to get her back at this point in the season and see what we can get going these last [six] games."
Kloppenburg was asked whether Bird, 39, is likely to be able to stay in the lineup the rest of the regular season, which ends for Seattle on Sept. 13.
"I would think that she would now," he said. "I think it feels good for her. I just think it's one of those things that takes time. And maybe just the first time, it wasn't quite there yet and so she needed to get some more rest on it. But I feel confident that she'll be back and get back in the flow quickly."
