Fortunately for the Seattle Storm, their duo of superstars Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart are healthy for the 2020 postseason as Seattle begins its run for their fourth championship in franchise history.
The impact of Bird and Stewart cannot be overstated. They make Seattle better statistically, of course, but their leadership also goes a long way for the Storm.
Just ask Seattle Coach Gary Kloppenburg.
In a recent interview with NBCSNW, Coach Kloppenburg described what it is like to have a leader like Sue Bird.
Through her 17-year-career in the WNBA, Bird has averaged 12.1 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game.
But again, it's her veteran leadership and ability to coach her teammates on the court that is so special.
“You don’t have very many players in the league or on your team throughout that can do that,” Kloppenburg added. “It is pretty amazing… At some point, some day, she can do anything she wants, but I think she would be a very good coach.”
It’s true; Bird is a one of a kind point guard.
As for her partner in crime, forward Breanna Stewart, who was the 2018 MVP of the Year, she has made her return this season following a torn Achilles that forced her to miss the entire 2019 WNBA season after suffering the injury while playing for Russian club Dynamo Kursk in the 2019 EuroLeague Women final back on April 14.
This season, Stewart was dealing with a foot injury; however, in 20 games played, she still averaged 19.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists.
Stewart’s coach along with the rest of the WNBA world has recognized just how hard she has worked to not just get back on the court after such a big injury, but to come back with her game improved.
Bird and Stewart helped secure Seattle’s Game 1 88-86 victory over the Minnesota Lynx in their semi finals matchup.
Bird finished with a game-high 8 assists, while Stewart finished with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Seattle's superstars will lace it up again in Game 2 of the Storm and Lynx series Thursday.
