Kei Nishikori reached new heights on Friday when he visited the famous Hahnenkamm (rooster's comb) in Kitzbühel ahead of his return to action next week at the Generali Open. The mountain is part of Kitzbühel’s picturesque ski resort and hosts an annual World Cup alpine ski race.

“It’s a great city,” Nishikori said. “Great mountains, great views. It’s my first time here, but I’m really enjoying it.”

The 30-year-old hasn’t competed since the 2019 US Open due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a right elbow injury which required surgery last October. Nishikori said he’s now at full strength and has been training well with his coaches, former World No. 2 Michael Chang and former doubles World No. 1 and Top 20 singles player Max Mirnyi.

“I had one year off because of my elbow issue, but I’m feeling good. I feel like I’m 100 per cent now, so I hope I can start with a good week in Kitzbühel,” Nishikori said. “I’m sure that I’m going to enjoy a match. It’s been a long time. I’m sure I’ll get nervous and all of the other emotions, but the first thing I’ll feel is enjoying the moment.”

Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini and Roberto Bautista Agut also headline Kitzbühel's entry list this year, which features nine players inside the Top 20 of the FedEx ATP Rankings.
