This year’s Algoma Bird City celebration, usually held in April, felt victim to pandemic worries, so the organization has developed a virtual alternative — and instead of taking up a few hours on a Saturday, the event will happen all during the month of September.
According to the press release from the Bird City Committee:
This month-long celebration will: highlight the amazing diversity of birds that visit the area; share ways to enjoy the birds; and offer suggestions on conserving and restoring migratory bird habitat.
The Bird City Algoma Facebook page will feature educational and entertaining posts about birds, birding and creating your own bird friendly yard. The Bird City Algoma website offers links to past Algoma Bird Celebration programs and a video display of photos taken by local bird watchers.
Do you have a favorite bird story of your own? Have you had a funny experience with one of our feathered friends, rescued a bird, observed interesting bird behavior or created an inviting space for birds in your yard? Share your story to be eligible for a prize and the opportunity to have your story published on the Bird City Algoma website.
Information about the story contest can be found on the Bird City Algoma Facebook page and the website at birdcityalgoma.com.
This virtual Algoma Bird Celebration recognizes World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) and replaces the canceled April event. The 2020 WMBD theme “Birds Connect Our World” emphasizes the importance of protecting migratory bird habitat. The City of Algoma has proclaimed September International Migratory Bird Month.
