On Saturday morning, an Oakland resident looked outside to see an unusual visitor at their front door: an escaped bird from the Oakland Zoo.
It's been a stressful week for the Oakland Zoo workers who care for its avian collection. During Tuesday's extreme winds, a tree fell onto a new Savanna aviary and six birds escaped into the storm. Luckily, the three missing superb starlings, pretty little iridescent blue-green and orange birds, flew back into their habitat on their own Thursday. On Friday, a hooded vulture named Oliver, who had been hanging around the zoo grounds, was lured into a flamingo habitat with some "tasty treats," the zoo said on Twitter. The bribery worked, and Oliver was captured and returned to his home.
But still missing were two pied crows, black-and-white birds native to Africa. On Saturday, an Oakland resident who lives a few miles from the zoo saw Deauville the crow puttering around their front porch. A video taken of Deauville captured a remarkably anthropomorphic sight as the bird strutted around and seemed to contemplate how to ask for help. Zookeepers who rushed to the residence were able to entice Deauville inside the house, slam the front door and trap him.
As of Sunday morning, the last missing bird is another pied crow named Diego. Zoo officials say he "startles easily" so anyone who spots him should not attempt to approach the bird. The zoo said pied crows are not a threat to people or other animals. They don't look like ordinary Bay Area crows. They've got a bright white "vest" and collar around their necks. They ask anyone who sees Diego to call their rescue hotline at 510-703-8986.
"In the meantime, while we repair the damage to the aviary, parts of the African Savanna may be closed to the public," the zoo wrote on Twitter. "We are proud of our animal care team for their tireless dedication to the safety and care of these birds."
