Tahquamenon Falls summer programs include archery, daily tours, bird walks - MLive.com

PARADISE, MICH. -- Michigan’s largest waterfall isn’t the only attraction worth seeking out at Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

The 50,000-acre park in the eastern Upper Peninsula, which is home to one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River, has a schedule full of interpretive programming for visitors this summer.

Workshops, kids’ classes and daily guided tours of the falls are just a few of the upcoming events from the park’s current schedule, posted here under “Nature Programs.” The following interpretive programs are for the week of June 27-July 3. Programs are free unless otherwise noted; a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entrance into the park. Contact the park for more details.

Monday, June 27: Jr. Naturalist: Hiding in Plain Sight 10 a.m. at the Portage Shower Building (Lower Falls). Discover how animals use shapes and colors to blend in, or to stand out, during this 30-minute program for kids. Upper Falls Tour 2 p.m. at the Fact Shack. Join an interpretive ranger on a 45-minute walk to see the largest waterfall in Michigan. Meet at the Fact Shack (black bear display).

Tuesday, June 28: Morning Bird Walk 9 a.m. at the Lower Falls Picnic Area. Take a short walk with a park naturalist to learn a few birds living at the Lower Falls. Identify by sight and song during this 40-minute program. Upper Falls Tour 2 p.m. at the Fact Shack. 45-minute walk to see the largest waterfall in Michigan. Meet at the Fact Shack (black bear display).

Wednesday, June 29: Arrows Away! 10 a.m. at the Lower Falls Campground Office. Learn the basics of archery with hands-on practice shooting a compound bow. Children age 6-12 must have an adult present. Upper Falls Tour 2 p.m. at the Fact Shack. Join an interpretive ranger on a 45-minute walk to see the largest waterfall in Michigan. Meet at the Fact Shack (black bear display).

Thursday, June 30: Owl Puke Investigation 10 a.m. at the Portage Shower Building (Lower Falls). Find out what your owl ate for dinner by taking apart a real owl pellet during this fun morning program for all ages. Upper Falls Tour 2 p.m. at the Fact Shack. 45-minute walk to see the largest waterfall in Michigan. Meet at the Fact Shack (black bear display).

Friday, July 1: Jr. Naturalist: Tracks and Trails 10 a.m. at the Rivermouth Amphitheater (site 19). Learn how to identify animal tracks and signs during this morning program for kids of all ages. Upper Falls Tour 2 p.m.at the Fact Shack. Join an interpretive ranger on a 45-minute walk to see the largest waterfall in Michigan. Meet at the Fact Shack (black bear display).

Saturday, July 2: Arrows Away! 10 a.m. at the Lower Falls Campground Office. Learn the basics of archery with hands-on practice shooting a compound bow. Children age 6-12 must have an adult present. River Exploration 12-2 p.m. at the Lower Falls. Wear water shoes or sandals and use provided nets to catch insects, crayfish and more. Meet down the boardwalk toward the viewing platform. Upper Falls Tour 2 p.m. at the Fact Shack. 45-minute walk to see the largest waterfall in Michigan. Meet at the Fact Shack (black bear display).

Sunday, July 3: Jr. Naturalist: Breakfast with Bears 10 a.m. at the Portage Shower Building (Lower Falls). Discover what kind of food black bears eat during this morning program for kids. Upper Falls Tour 2 p.m. at the Fact Shack. Join an interpretive ranger on a 45-minute walk to see the largest waterfall in Michigan. Meet at the Fact Shack (black bear display).
