The 21ft long reptile, known as Lolong, was announced by Guinness World Records as the biggest of its kind in captivity in 2012
The biggest known saltwater crocodile died due to "stress" in captivity after being suspected of eating a fisherman and a school girl.
A picture on a Reddit community ‘Interestingasf***’ regenerated interest in the crocodile.
The image was captioned: "'Lolong’ was the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity. He died because of ‘fungal infection’ and ‘stress’ two years after being captured."
The corpse of Lolong is being preserved in the National Museum of Natural History in Manila, Philippines, where it needs 18 people to move around.
Before being captured, the croc was believed to have swallowed a fisherman who vanished from the town of Bunawan.
The croc is also thought to have bitten a 12-year-old girl's head off, and consumed her body two years prior, as revealed by The Daily Star.
Lolong was hunted for three weeks before being captured and locked up in a tourism park.
But the beast died of a "fungal infection" and "stress" after two years of being caged.
The local mayor told the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper: "He refused to eat since last month and we noticed a change in the colour of his faeces.
"Our personnel also noticed an unusual ballooning of the reptile's belly."
One user who had visited the body said: "Went to see it when I was there some years ago. It's very, very big. Sort of like seeing a dinosaur recreation. Except you know.. these things still live."
